Sound Sleep Cocoon

Updated: Apr 2, 2018

As I mentioned in my first blog, The Beauty Lounge is one of the premier Dermalogica Salons in the country, and as such we are lucky enough to be able to get our mitts on products sooner than most, as well as attending their product launches.

Dermalogica have just released the latest edition to their family... Sound Sleep Cocoon. So, what's it all about, who's it for, why do I need it??

In my blog on retinol, I touched on how the skin rejuvenates itself at night time. This new night time gel-cream has been researched and developed to improve skin's radiance overnight by optismising the skin's own night-time recovery process, leaving skin looking more luminous by the morning. You can use it as a stand alone night-time moisturiser or you can add it to your existing night-time routine.

So if you're looking for a more luminous skin ... as well as an aid to a good night's sleep, then read on....

Sound Sleep Cocoon has a dual purpose. Not only will it optimise your night-time skin care routine and recovery by making the most out of the body's overnight repair process, but with the essential oils it also contains, it aids a full restful night's sleep. Apply one to two pumps onto your fingertips and lightly massage it in to your face and neck using circular motions. Then close your eyes, cup your hands over your nose and mouth and breathe in deeply for 3 seconds, inhaling the essential oils for maximum benefit. Repeat for 15 seconds.

It comes in a round tub which you twist to release the product. It has the most satisfactory 'click'... It has a lightweight non-greasy formula with a faint smell of lavender. Not overpowering at all. Smooth over face and neck as the last part of your night time routine.

The Sciencey Bit

Sound Sleep Cocoon is enriched with soothing Patchouli and Sandalwood as well as motion activated Lavandin oil. Meaning that each time you move in your sleep, the oils are then activated, promoting a deep, restful sleep. I've heard of Lavender oil but not Lavandin so I researched what the difference was and according to The Lavender Fields Farm in Hampshire, Lavandin is a stronger, more powerful and uplifting variety of Lavender. Lavender is well known for its calming, sleep inducing properties as well as being anti-bacterial and good for colds. Lavendin contains more Camphor than regular Lavender making it even better for colds... I wonder if its good for colds, would it help with snoring??!

The other active ingredients are:

  • Persian Silk Tree Extract . I'd never heard of it either! Apparently its leaves close at night so it is nicknamed 'the night sleeper' and its packed with antioxidants (as well anti-ageing properties) all of which encourage a restful sleep whilst providing antioxidant protection as it fights those pesky free radicals which can cause the skin to age. It reduces signs of fatigue such as skin slackening (I am so looking forward to trying this product!)

  • Kakadu Plum Extract, native to northern Australia and packed with vitamin C so it delivers the antioxidant protection we need as well as improving luminosity and skin tone.

  • Wu-Zhu-Yu Fruit Extract is widely used in Chinese medicine as it promotes a refined, even skin tone and texture. It too aids in illuminating the skin, visibly increasing the skin's radiance.

  • Tamarind Seed has a chemical structure similar to hylauronic acid so it reduces water loss and helps protect the skin's natural barrier function.

Impact of Sleep on your Skin

Sleep is sooooooo important for us. We know what we look and feel like if we have not had a good night's rest! Sallow skin, puffy eyes, not to mention irritable to the point you could kick the cat! It impairs our bodily and mental functions. Around 45% of us suffer from sleep deprivation and I think we can all hold our hands up to at least having this problem at some point in our lives.

Sound Sleep Cocoon is suitable for all skin types

During the night our bodies have increased blood-flow which is why it is the best time for our skin to absorb topical products. The hours between 9pm and 12am are the optimal time as that's when the body begins secreting antioxidant-rich melatonin.
